“We watch TV on our phone” – a seemingly innocuous statement that encapsulates the ever-changing landscape of media consumption in the modern age. Gone are the days when the living room television was the sole gateway to the world of visual and moving content. While this technological revolution has undeniably expanded our access to information, it has also exposed us to a barrage of media content, both genuine and crazy.
While the word “crazy” is not a scientific term or a recognized disease in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), it has become an expressive descriptor that captures, with surprising accuracy, the profound impact of this fast-paced transformation on our minds.
Amidst this digital whirlwind, the idea of bringing media literacy skills to the people came to life, initiated by Algerian content creators determined to equip their peers with the necessary training to become better consumers and creators of media. Their vision was to spread the word, impact lives, and cultivate these essential skills throughout the nation.
In December 2021, the first Algerian Media Literacy Camp came to life after more than six months of meticulous planning, organizing, and team-building. The camp was made possible through a grant secured via alumni ties with the U.S. Department of State and consisted of only five team members: Bilal, Safa, Meriem, Nardjes, and SidAhmed. The primary goal of the camp was to conduct an intensive training program for fifteen amateur content creators, spanning over the course of four days and five nights.
The training which took place in the capital Algiers, was composed of workshops, panels, and interactive activities focused on media literacy basics, ethical journalism, digital security, and content creation essentials like podcasting and video making. Additionally, there was a panel discussion featuring established content creators from across Algeria, delving into the topic of hate speech and its impact among the consumers of new media.
Participants ages between 18 and 30 years old were selected through a rigorous and meticulous selection process, ensuring that only the most deserving and committed individuals had the opportunity to join the camp. The process began with interested candidates applying by filling out a detailed form, where they were required to demonstrate their eligibility for the training. Additionally, applicants were asked to express their passion for media literacy and their motivations for becoming part of this transformative experience through thought-provoking essays.
The selection committee diligently reviewed each application, considering not only the applicants’ qualifications but also their dedication to the cause of media literacy. The goal was to assemble a diverse and passionate group of participants, each bringing their unique perspectives and experiences to enrich the collective learning journey.
By implementing such a rigorous selection process, the camp organisers aimed to ensure that the chosen participants (fifteen in number) were not only qualified but also deeply committed to embracing the spirit of the camp as a whole. The team sought individuals who resonated with the core values of media literacy and possessed a genuine passion for becoming active agents of positive change in the digital realm.
The spirit of the camp revolved around fostering a community of like-minded individuals, united by their shared dedication to media literacy education and responsible content creation. Through thought-provoking workshops, engaging discussions, and interactive activities, the camp aimed to nurture critical thinking, empathy, and a sense of social responsibility in its participants.
The people of the camp were undeniably its most extraordinary success. Each participant brought a unique blend of curiosity, enthusiasm, and determination, transforming the camp into a vibrant melting pot of ideas and experiences. From the moment they gathered, a sense of camaraderie and mutual support permeated the atmosphere, creating an unforgettable sense of community. Even long after the camp’s conclusion, this spirit of togetherness continues to thrive, as they remain connected through unstopped gatherings, joyous birthday parties, and support groups for each challenge a participant may face.
The camp continued to have two more successful editions, thanks to the invaluable support from the Alumni Engagement Fund through the U.S. Department of State. The second was a South edition that took place in Bechar, a captivating place known for its cultural richness and historical significance. The third edition, a West edition, was held in Oran, the vibrant and bustling city of Algeria, renowned for its artistic flair and coastal beauty.
The workshops were diversified by incorporating AI literacy, media evaluation, and recognizing hate speech. Participants were continually challenged to expand their knowledge and skills in these crucial areas throughout the camp.
To ensure active engagement and practical application of the learning, participants were required to deliver a project at the end of each camp. This project served as a tangible representation of their acquired knowledge and creativity. It encouraged them to think critically, implement media literacy principles, and develop content that promoted responsible and informed media practices.
With this approach, the camp not only fostered theoretical understanding but also empowered participants to become proactive content creators and advocates of media literacy. The projects showcased their growth and ingenuity, making a positive impact in their communities and amplifying the message of media literacy across Algeria.
Through the projects, social media presence, and participants sharing their rich experiences, the camp garnered a dedicated following of individuals eager to participate in a similar transformative experience. The impact of the camp reverberated beyond its physical boundaries, reaching a wider audience through the power of digital connectivity and storytelling.
People from diverse backgrounds and regions expressed their eagerness to participate in the next editions, driven by the desire to be part of this dynamic community. The camp’s alumni played a crucial role in amplifying the message, sharing testimonials of their own experiences, and showcasing the profound impact of media literacy on their lives.
Due to the overwhelming demand, the camp’s team embarked on a journey to three different cities, organizing open days to provide more insights about the project and deliver one-day workshops on media literacy concepts and media evaluation techniques.
The team’s decision to expand the camp’s reach was met with great enthusiasm from communities eager to enhance their media literacy skills. The open days served as an opportunity to engage with a broader audience, introducing them to the camp’s transformative approach and showcasing the impact of media literacy education.
With just a few more events to go, including a camp in Constantine city and a closing ceremony in Algiers, the team of the Algerian Media Literacy Camp (AMLC) reflects on this incredible journey with immense pride. The camp’s success has been nothing short of pioneering, as it brought forth a transformative experience that was both new and undeniably necessary in today’s digital landscape.
The AMLCs are now contemplating the next milestone in their journey: the creation of a platform. This platform will serve as a dynamic hub for media literacy education in Algeria and the MENA region, providing a space for continuous learning, collaboration, and community engagement.
With the successful camp editions serving as a strong foundation, the team envisions a digital platform that will extend the reach of media literacy education to a wider audience. Through this online space, participants, alumni, and enthusiasts can access valuable resources, participate in interactive workshops, and engage in meaningful discussions about media literacy topics.
Indeed, the platform will undoubtedly be a treasure trove of cherished memories, holding a vast collection of pictures from our most valuable moments. As a digital repository of the AMLC journey, it will capture the essence of the camp’s vibrant atmosphere, the joy of learning, and the profound connections forged among participants.
As the AMLC team looks back on the incredible journey that brought media literacy education to the forefront in Algeria, they are filled with immense pride and gratitude. What began as an idea to empower young individuals has blossomed into a movement that transcends boundaries, igniting a passion for knowledge, critical thinking, and responsible media practices.
The camp’s resounding success and the vision for the future platform are testaments to the unwavering commitment of everyone involved. The dedication of the participants, the guidance of the trainers, and the support of various entities have all played a crucial role in shaping this transformative experience.
