Yet the questions raised by an election season extend far beyond any one country. Across democracies, citizens are navigating political polarization, fragmented information environments, declining trust, and growing uncertainty about how to live alongside people whose views differ from their own. I have been thinking increasingly about what I call Civic Friendship: the idea that democratic life depends on relationships strong enough to withstand disagreement. Civic friendship asks us to recognize one another as fellow participants in a shared public life, even when our political beliefs, experiences, and priorities lead us in very different directions. It makes room for deep disagreement, moral clarity, and firm opposition while preserving curiosity, respect, and the possibility of continued relationship.

That task has become harder in contemporary media environments. Increasingly, we encounter people with whom we disagree through fragments: a viral clip, a headline, a social media post, a meme, or a few seconds of someone at their most provocative. Those fragments can quickly become substitutes for actual people. Political labels begin carrying entire assumptions about someone’s character, motivations, and values. Media literacy gives us tools to resist that tendency. We teach people to ask who created a message, what context may be missing, whose interests shape its presentation, and how platforms influence what rises to our attention. Those same habits can shape how we encounter one another. In that sense, media literacy has a relational dimension. It is about more than identifying misinformation or evaluating the credibility of a source. It can also help us resist mistaking a mediated representation of another person for the whole person. In an age of political sorting, recognizing missing context, selective framing, and caricature is part of learning how to live with one another democratically.

At the Ramos Research Institute, we think about this through our Citizenship Empowerment Framework. Democratic participation begins with knowledge, including civic knowledge and the media literacy necessary to navigate an increasingly complex information environment. It then requires what we call Courageous Dialogue: the practice of remaining present, reflective, curious, and willing to listen across difference. Those capacities ultimately have to lead toward meaningful engagement in the world around us. Each element strengthens the others. Knowledge provides the foundation for participation. Courageous dialogue allows people to test ideas, hear competing perspectives, and remain in relationship through disagreement. Engagement turns those capacities outward into communities and public life.

There is also a responsibility here for those of us who work in media literacy, democracy, civic education, and related fields. We frequently ask students and citizens to engage across difference, challenge their assumptions, seek competing perspectives, and resist reducing people to political categories. Those expectations should apply equally to researchers, educators, and practitioners. It is relatively easy to endorse dialogue as an intellectual principle. The harder work begins when dialogue requires meaningful relationships with people whose politics, values, or worldviews make us uncomfortable. Our commitment to pluralism carries greater weight when our classrooms, professional networks, research communities, and personal relationships require us to practice it ourselves.

For educators especially, modeling matters. Students learn from what we demonstrate as much as from what we teach. If we want them to evaluate information carefully, approach disagreement with curiosity, and participate constructively in public life, they should see those habits practiced by the people asking it of them. The political divisions themselves will look different across countries and democratic traditions, but the underlying challenge is shared: how do we sustain democratic relationships across genuine difference?

Elections will produce winners and losers. Political disagreements will endure. New technologies will continue reshaping how we understand one another. Civic friendship offers no shortcut around those tensions. Its value lies in helping us remain capable of seeing one another as more than the position we oppose. Our democracies depend on people who can disagree seriously while continuing to share institutions, communities, classrooms, workplaces, and public spaces. That responsibility belongs to our students, our communities, and our institutions. It also belongs to us.

I have been thinking increasingly about what I call Civic Friendship: the idea that democratic life depends on relationships
