PLEASE!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">On January 10, 2009, the yell heard round the world took place in the St. James Theatre. The three-time Tony Award winner, two-time Grammy award winner, and two-time Olivier Award winner, Patti LuPone took matters into her own hands during the grand finale of the musical <em>Gypsy<\/em>, \u201cRose\u2019s Turn,\u201d where she played the iconic role of Mama Rose. Patti <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WruzPfJ9Rys&amp;t=39s\">shouted<\/a>, \u201cSTOP TAKING PICTURES RIGHT NOW. YOU\u2019VE HARD THE ANNOUNCEMENT. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!\u201d The viral audio would not be heard around the world if it wasn\u2019t for another audience member sneaking in a video. Not only did <strong>one<\/strong> audience member not turn off their devices during a performance, but <strong>two<\/strong>. Who&#8217;s to say that there wasn\u2019t more? A night out on Broadway is not a walk in the park or a cheap date. <em>The New York Times<\/em> published the article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/23\/briefing\/broadway-ticket-prices.html\">\u201cThe Price of a Show\u201d<\/a> explaining the astronomical prices to see art. <em>The Times<\/em> article states that \u201cthe overall average ticket price on Broadway last week was $134.96. There were nine shows selling seats for under $50, including Tony-winning productions of \u2018Chicago\u2019 and \u2018Hadestown\u2019 and \u2018Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">An alarm going off during the climax of any performance can absolutely ruin an experience for not only actors, but also for audience members. Theatre is sacred. In a world where everyone is staring at a screen, there is a beauty in the shared humanity of humans staring at a story as it unfold right in front of their eyes through the beauty of being in the theatre. Unfortunately, it is not easy for many audience members to be off their phones whether it\u2019s 90 minutes with no intermission or 120 minutes with intermission.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1116\" height=\"902\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ic4ml.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Yondr.png?fit=1116%2C902&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"A green and black Yondr pouch holds a cell phone.\" class=\"wp-image-8047\" style=\"width:600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ic4ml.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Yondr.png?w=1116&amp;ssl=1 1116w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ic4ml.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Yondr.png?resize=300%2C242&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ic4ml.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Yondr.png?resize=768%2C621&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Cell phone addiction is a real addiction that has heightened during the pandemic. In March 12, 2020, due the rapid spread of COVID-19, all 41 Broadway theatres went dark. Broadway was shut down for a long 18 months. Where there was no theatre, there were cell phones. On YouTube, you can watch 866 Broadway bootlegs, courtesy of audience members not turning off their phones. These videos are also of before and after the pandemic. Therefore, here\u2019s why is it that audience members need multiple announcements to turn off their devices and simply cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em>Eyewitness News<\/em> in New York City <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/cellphone-data-covid-pandemic-nyc\/13441375\/\">analyzed cell locations<\/a> in the spring of 2023 to the spring of 2019. They discovered that, \u201cin the downtown areas, including both Midtown and Wall Street, there is about 71% of the cellphone activity compared to before the pandemic started.\u201d There is an addiction and a need to be on our cellphones.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"656\" height=\"1028\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ic4ml.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Birsh-in-Program.png?fit=656%2C1028&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Philip Birsh reminds theater goers to &quot;turn off your cell phones&quot; in play bill.\n\" class=\"wp-image-8041\" style=\"width:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ic4ml.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Birsh-in-Program.png?w=656&amp;ssl=1 656w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ic4ml.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Birsh-in-Program.png?resize=191%2C300&amp;ssl=1 191w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 656px) 100vw, 656px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This addiction has been known as prevalent in the Broadway community before and after the pandemic. Before the pandemic, the Broadway show, <em>Freestyle Love Supreme<\/em>, introduced foam pouches in which ushers asked audience members to place phones in pockets. Since Broadway reopened on September 14, 2021 there is now a new note in every Broadway Playbill from the President and Chairman of Playbill Inc., Philip. S. Birsh. The second statement that Birsch expresses in the Playbill is to \u201cturn off your cell phones. All the way off\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Sadly, history does repeat itself. The St. James theatre must have a curse for it was once again haunted with a phone going off during the most iconic, showstopping scene in a musical. Nicole Scherzinger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@latenightseth\/video\/7468068605674949930\">revealed in an interview with Seth Meyers<\/a> that in the new Broadway revival of <em>Sunset Boulevard<\/em>. Nicole says that this incident took place during \u201cMost important part of the entire show.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Will there be more actors shouting, \u201cSTOP TAKING PICTURES RIGHT NOW. YOU\u2019VE HARD THE ANNOUNCEMENT. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!\u201d or will audience members finally respect the theatre and silence their cell phones?
