McLuhan’s Tetrad and Ecomedia Literacy: A Systems Thinking Approach for Transformative Media Education

Abstract

This article proposes Marshall McLuhan’s tetrad of media effects (enhancement, obsolescence, retrieval, and reversal) as a generative framework for ecomedia literacy education. Drawing on McLuhan’s Laws of Media and his figure/ground distinction, the article argues that the tetrad’s non-linear, ecological logic is uniquely suited to the demands of media education in an age of planetary crisis, where understanding how media technologies shape environmental culture requires tools that go beyond surface-level content critique. The article develops this argument through three interconnected applications. First, it applies the tetrad to artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) in educational settings, revealing how these technologies simultaneously enhance personalized learning, obsolesce traditional assessment practices, retrieve transmission-model pedagogies, and risk reversing into environments of cognitive offloading, epistemic dependency, and automated academic fraud. Second, it connects McLuhan’s figure/ground framework to the Iceberg Model of systems thinking, demonstrating how both tools train learners to read beneath the visible events and media spectacles of environmental crisis toward the deeper structures, power relations, and mental models that generate them. Third, the article applies the tetrad reflexively to ecomedia literacy as a medium in its own right, examining what the practice itself enhances, obsolesces, retrieves, and risks reversing into when implemented without critical care. Taken together, these analyses position the tetrad not merely as an analytical instrument but as a pedagogical disposition, one that moves educators and students beyond reactive, individualistic responses to ecological crisis and toward the systems thinking, collective agency, and regenerative cultural imagination that transformative media education demands.

Introduction

Ecomedia literacy teaches students how media technologies interact with, shape, and are shaped by living systems and planetary boundaries (López, 2021). This approach draws inspiration from holistic methodologies like the cultural studies “circuit of culture” model (Du Gay et al., 1997), but one of its strongest influences is Marshall McLuhan’s tetrad—a tool for engaging what he called the “laws of media” (McLuhan & McLuhan, 1999). The tetrad invites us to explore four simultaneous questions about any medium or technical innovation. Unlike linear models of communication, it encourages a holistic method for prompting how new technologies:

  • Enhance: Amplify certain human capacities
  • Obsolesce: Push older practices and technologies into the background
  • Retrieve: Recover or resurrect modes of being thought lost
  • Reverse: Flip into unintended or paradoxical outcomes when taken to extremes

These four “laws” provide a tool for examining how each medium restructures relationships, behaviors, and cultural environments, not in isolation or sequence but as an analogical, holistic, and testable framework. McLuhan formalized this approach in the posthumously published Laws of Media (1988), written with his son Eric McLuhan. 

As non-linear heuristic, the tetrad engages an “ecological approach” to analysis that helps articulate the subtle and often unrecognized ways that emerging media reshape our lives. The term “ecology” is used to stress that media form environments of interdependent systems that shape and are shaped by human perception, culture, and social organization, much like organisms within a natural ecosystem. Instead of simple cause and effect, “media ecology” recognizes media as dynamic environments in constant flux and interdependence. These media change both the “ground” (social context) and the “figure” (immediate effects). As Neil Postman explains:

Technological change is neither additive nor subtractive. It is ecological. I mean ‘ecological’ in the same sense as the word is used by environmental scientists. One significant change generates total change. If you remove the caterpillars from a given habitat, you are not left with the same environment minus caterpillars: you have a new environment, and you have reconstituted the conditions of survival; the same is true if you add caterpillars to an environment that has had none. This is how the ecology of media works as well. A new technology does not add or subtract something. It changes everything. (Postman, 1993, p. 18)

Media Ecosystems

In a 2006 presentation to the Associated Press, media critic John Naughten (2006) warned newspaper editors about the looming threat to their business model coming from the Internet. To describe the function of a medium in a media ecosystem, he used the metaphor of gel medium, such as used in Petri dishes to provide nutrients for biological material to grow. In this spirit, a media ecosystem can be likened to a living environment in which a particular medium (like print, broadcast TV, or the internet) supplies material, economic, social, and cultural “nutrients” that shape what kinds of meanings, practices, and social forms can take root and flourish. Here medium is not just a neutral conduit but a carrier of specific affordances, constraints, and sensory biases (its “nutrient mix”) that enable some cultural forms to grow while stunting others. Subsequently, human society functions like an organism whose development depends on the kinds of symbolic nutrients it continually absorbs through its dominant media, so changes in the medium alter the conditions of cultural growth. From an education perspective, consider the linguistic origins of culture, which come from the agricultural practice of cultivation. As educators working with context of media ecosystems, we are developing the skills to cultivate healthier conditions for students to thrive.

The Tetrad and AI

Artificial Intelligence, as a relatively new and increasingly pervasive medium, is “growing” novel cultural forms (AI‑generated influencers and synthetic personalities, AI‑slop content farms, automated disinformation and micro‑targeted persuasion, synthetic media ecologies, and AI‑augmented identities), and the central ecological question is what long‑term effects this growth has on cognition, democracy, inequality, and the planet’s other ecosystems. To explore these impacts on education, we can use the tetrad as a heuristic to probe (as opposed to diagnose) how AI large language models (LLMs) are generating multiple, sometimes contradictory, possibilities. LLMs enhance learners’ and teachers’ capacity to generate and revise text, code, feedback, and explanations on demand, supporting personalization, access, and rapid formative guidance at scale (Danyaro et al., 2025).  At the same time, they enhance the production of fluent but potentially incorrect “confident nonsense,” which can mislead students, obscure sources, and create new demands for epistemic vigilance and critical AI literacy (Anh-Hoang et al., 2025). LLMs tend to obsolesce routine, low-stakes writing and problem-set tasks as measures of learning, along with some forms of drill-based homework and purely recall-oriented assessment. They also risk pushing aside slower, effortful practices of drafting, checking sources, and negotiating disagreement that traditionally help students develop argumentation, inquiry habits, and a sense of justified belief (Lindebaum et al., 2025). 

LLMs retrieve older imaginaries of automated tutors, teaching machines, and frictionless knowledge transfer—tools that promise individualized instruction without the labor and unpredictability of human teachers (Major & Francis, 2020). They also revive a transmission model of knowledge in which answers appear as authoritative outputs, inviting students to treat the system as a “surrogate knower” rather than engaging in dialogic, socially situated meaning-making emphasized in critical pedagogy (Jose et al., 2025). Pushed to extremes, the medium reverses into learning environments where LLMs drastically reduce students’ cognitive load—making it effortless to generate AI‑polished essays, worked solutions, and citation‑like text—so that the performance of competence can detach from the actual, effortful processing through which understanding and long‑term memory are normally built. Empirical studies already show that LLM‑assisted learners often report lower mental effort and cognitive engagement than peers using traditional tools, raising concerns about cognitive offloading, accumulated “cognitive debt,” and the deskilling or even “never‑skilling” of higher‑order reasoning 

It’s important to note that the tetrad is meant to disrupt confirmation bias. It should allow a more dispassionate analysis (neither inherently “good” nor “bad”) to make the familiar unfamiliar. From this perspective, a tetrad probe might offer different insights that acknowledge both opportunities and challenges without predetermined judgments. The key is that the tetrad invites multiple perspectives and encourages us to see beyond our initial assumptions. This makes it an ideal tool for media educators who want to help students develop nuanced, critical thinking about technology.

Figure/ground and the Iceberg Model of Analysis: Seeing the Invisible Context 

A crucial concept in McLuhan’s work is the distinction between figure/ground (McLuhan & Fiore, 1968; McLuhan & McLuhan, 1999). In McLuhan’s theory, figure/ground names the relationship between the obvious, attention‑grabbing content or effect of a medium (figure) and the often invisible environment or infrastructure that supports and shapes it (ground), both of which must be read together to grasp a medium’s impact. Understanding this distinction is essential for applying the tetrad effectively, because for McLuhan every medium must be read as a figure (the obvious content or effect) on a ground (the less visible environment that enables and shapes it). When you scroll through a social media feed on a smartphone, the figure is whatever is visible and immediately grabs your attention: a friend’s post, a news headline, an advertisement, the stream of content itself. The ground is the hidden infrastructure and context that makes that feed appear as it does: algorithms that curate and rank posts, wireless networks and data centers that enable connectivity, social norms that shape how people behave online, and commercial interests that determine what is available and visible. Most users attend only to the visible figure without noticing the invisible ground that powerfully shapes what is seen, how it is seen, and how users respond, but recognizing both aligns with McLuhan’s formulation and makes it possible to understand more critically how media environments organize everyday experience and social reality.

In media coverage of the climate crisis, the figure is again the striking, high‑impact content: dramatic footage of burning forests, flooded streets, starving polar bears, or smokey skylines that signal disaster and command attention. The ground consists of the wider climate media environment and material conditions that make these images possible and intelligible: long‑term greenhouse gas emissions, energy and land‑use systems, policy decisions, economic interests, and global inequalities that shape who is most exposed, which stories get told, and how they are framed. Climate literacy, understood in McLuhan’s figure/ground sense, asks audiences not only to react to the spectacle of climate imagery but to read through it—using the emotional pull of the figure as a starting point for interrogating the underlying structures, responsibilities, and power relations that typically remain off‑screen. This approach helps students understand that addressing climate change requires more than reacting to individual events. It demands systemic transformation based on understanding deep patterns and root causes.

An in important analytical tool popular with environmental educators and systems thinking is the iceberg model (Goodman, 2002), which deepens McLuhan’s figure/ground concept. Using the visual of an iceberg in which we only see the surface of a much larger object, the iceberg model helps people understand that the visible aspects (figure) of any issue are only a small part of a much larger, mostly hidden whole (ground). It consists of four levels:

  • Events (Tip of the Iceberg) – What just happened? The visible, attention-grabbing phenomena – Individual incidents that make headlines
  • Patterns and Trends (Just Below the Surface) What’s been happening over time? Recurring cycles and trends; historical patterns.
  • Underlying Structures (Deeper) What has influenced these patterns? Institutional structures and power relations; policies and economic incentives; how systems are organized.
  • Mental Models (The Base) What assumptions, beliefs, and values shape the system? Cultural worldviews and paradigms; deep-seated beliefs that drive behavior

In ecomedia literacy, the Iceberg Model directly mirrors McLuhan’s figure/ground concept: the figure is the tip of the iceberg—the visible surface event or media message, such as a dramatic news headline, viral video, or documentary about an oil spill or climate protest—while the ground is everything beneath the surface, the vast system of long‑term behavioral trends, policy frameworks, industry practices, media infrastructures, institutional structures, power relations, and shared mental models or cultural worldviews that shape which environmental stories emerge, how they are framed, and how events are produced, interpreted, and either amplified or suppressed. By applying the Iceberg Model, ecomedia literacy education teaches learners to look beyond the figure and critically examine this opaque ground of historical forces, policies, economic incentives, and ideological assumptions, cultivating future changemakers who move from short‑term reactions to high‑profile crises toward long‑term, systems‑based engagement and demands for systemic transformation.

Applying the Tetrad to Ecomedia Literacy

When we apply McLuhan’s tetrad to ecomedia literacy itself, we reveal its transformative societal functions and cultural challenges, a meta-analysis that helps educators understand not just how to teach ecomedia literacy, but what it fundamentally does in our culture.

What Ecomedia Literacy Enhances: Ecomedia literacy amplifies several crucial capacities simultaneously. It fosters a redefinition of media itself, encouraging students to see media not just as content or messages but as infrastructure, museum, ritual, and sensory experience—an expanded definition that helps learners grasp the full scope of media’s environmental and cultural impact. It also frames media education as a form of climate action and participatory democracy, teaching students that analyzing and creating media is not separate from environmental activism but a crucial part of it. Perhaps most importantly, it inspires inclusion, effective storytelling, creative practices, and sensory engagement, helping students construct “good ecological narratives”—stories that inform without paralyzing and that motivate action rather than cultivate despair.

What Ecomedia Literacy Retrieves: Ecomedia literacy recovers important concepts and practices that dominant educational models have marginalized. It revives collective approaches to resources, storytelling, activism, and decision-making, echoing historical practices of managing shared commons and building community power together. It also recovers earlier forms of engagement: sensory experience and ritual, play and games as genuine learning tools, cognitive diversity, and indigenous cosmologies that foster reciprocal relationships with the environment and with each other. In doing so, it rehabilitates holistic ecologies of learning and creativity that were pushed aside by industrial and mechanistic models—ways of knowing that honor multiple forms of intelligence and refuse to separate knowledge from lived experience.

What Ecomedia Literacy Obsolesces: Ecomedia literacy pushes certain entrenched approaches into the background. It displaces the transmission model of communication and teaching—linear, top-down, anthropocentric frameworks that place humans at the center of nature rather than within it, and that locate all environmental responsibility with individuals rather than enabling collective and systemic action. It also erodes mechanistic and colonial epistemologies that separate humans from nature and devalue non-Western perspectives, as well as neoliberal and instrumental approaches to education and media that reduce complex ecological issues to market solutions and exclude marginalized voices from the conversation.

What Ecomedia Literacy Reverses Into: When taken to extremes or implemented poorly, ecomedia literacy can flip into the very problems it aims to solve. The complexity that makes it powerful can become diffuse and disorienting, tipping into eco-anxiety without concrete action and leaving students feeling overwhelmed rather than empowered. Too much complexity without clear frameworks risks reverting into confusion, disengagement, or eco-fatigue—especially when the approach is not grounded in hope, clarity, and actionable practice, turning the goal of empowerment into paralysis. Worst of all, if its critical emphasis is lost, ecomedia literacy can reinforce the media spectacle and greenwashing it seeks to critique, with organizations adopting surface-level “eco-friendly” messaging without changing underlying systems and the field’s transformative potential collapsing into the merely performative. Recognizing these potential reversals is essential for educators designing programs that maintain critical depth while keeping learners engaged, hopeful, and capable of action.

Implications for Teaching Practice

When media literacy educators apply the tetrad to their own practice of teaching ecomedia literacy, several key insights emerge. The tetrad’s four fields encourage holistic, systems-level reflection that moves beyond critiquing media content to examining the deeper ecological functions and consequences of media education itself.

Enhancement in Practice

A useful guiding question for educators is: *How does incorporating ecomedia literacy amplify positive capacities in my classroom?* Applying the tetrad reveals that ecomedia literacy amplifies systems thinking among students, deepens environmental responsibility, and strengthens critical reflection skills, ultimately empowering learners to address climate issues through both media analysis and content creation. In practical terms, this means designing lessons that explicitly connect media analysis to environmental action, showing students that understanding how media systems work is itself part of responding to ecological crisis.

Obsolescence in Practice

A second key question is: *What outdated approaches in my teaching does ecomedia literacy help me move beyond?* The tetrad invites educators to recognize the pedagogies that may be holding them back: the linear transmission model that positions the teacher as the sole source of knowledge, anthropocentric worldviews that treat humans as separate from and superior to nature, and individualistic approaches that ignore the possibility of collective action. The practical implication is a shift toward more participatory, inclusive, and ecological modes of media education—creating space for student voice, indigenous perspectives, and collaborative learning.

Retrieval in Practice

A third question asks: What valuable approaches can ecomedia literacy help me recover? Teaching ecomedia literacy brings back marginalized perspectives, including indigenous ecologies and commons thinking, as well as collective storytelling, community action, rituals of hope and activism, and multiple ways of knowing and learning that dominant schooling has sidelined. Practically, this means integrating diverse knowledge systems into curriculum, honoring local and traditional ecological knowledge, and creating classroom rituals that build hope and agency rather than reinforcing despair.

Reversal in Practice

Finally, educators must ask: What could go wrong if I take this approach to extremes? Pushed too far or implemented without care, ecomedia literacy can produce eco-anxiety and paralysis by exposing students to overwhelming levels of complexity without providing clear pathways to action, and it risks becoming a form of digital greenwashing—superficial engagement with environmental themes that produces no real change in thinking or behavior. To prevent these reversals, educators should consistently balance critical inquiry with agency and empowerment, always pairing analysis of problems with exploration of solutions, monitoring student well-being, and adjusting the level of complexity to keep learners engaged rather than immobilized.

Conclusion: Toward a Regenerative Media Culture

McLuhan’s tetrad illuminates how ecomedia literacy is not just a new curriculum or pedagogical add-on but a transformative process with deep implications for citizenship, justice, and the future of media. It enhances our capacity for systems thinking and collective action, helping us see connections that were previously invisible and empowering us to work together for change. It retrieves vital traditions and ecologies that were marginalized by dominant paradigms, reconnecting us with wisdom and ways of knowing that honor our interdependence with all life. It obsolesces reductive models that no longer serve us, making space for more holistic, inclusive, and regenerative approaches to media and learning. And it can reverse into confusion and inertia if not actively navigated with care, attention to context, and commitment to hope alongside critique.

The tetrad reminds us that every medium, every technology, every pedagogical choice creates ripples throughout the system. By learning to see and work with these ripples consciously, media educators become agents of transformation, helping create the conditions for a more just, sustainable, and flourishing world.

To Avoid Being Led
Down the (Media) Garden Path

It is entirely appropriate to evaluate Marshall McLuhan as an environmentalist, to apply McLuhan work in an ecological manner.

Following the publication of ‘Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man’ in 1964, McLuhan began speaking of media increasingly as environments in a literal, not in a merely metaphorical sense. 

“Any new technology, any extension or amplification of human faculties when given material embodiment, tends to create a new environment.” (1)

“It is now perfectly plain to me that all media are environments. As environments, all media have all the effects that geographers and biologists have associated with environments in the past. Environments shape their occupants.” (2)

Under the principle that we try to live looking forward and yet understanding often is the result of looking back, McLuhan later observed that, at least in the West, both the perception of the natural world as something to be protected and preserved, and the notion of technologies as also comprising a kind of environment, could be traced back to the shift in perspective brought about by satellite technologies. 

“…Sputnik created a new environment for the planet. For the first time the natural world was enclosed in a man-made container. At the moment that the earth went inside this new artifact, Nature ended and Ecology was born. ‘Ecological’ thinking became inevitable as soon as the planet moved up into the status of a work of art.” (3)

Lopez correctly sets media ecology in formal causality and simultaneous relations rather than the ‘cause and effect’ of efficient causality and the accepted scientific method. (4) McLuhan’s method, labeled the ‘new science’ (5) in the tradition of Vico and Bacon, took a different approach. “To explore these impacts on education, we can use the tetrad as a heuristic to probe (as opposed to diagnose)…” Lopez writes. Later “It’s important to note that the tetrad is meant to disrupt confirmation bias.” Where the so-called ‘scientific method’ begins with hypothesis, a conclusion then proved or disproved, McLuhan’s method begins with observation. This method is more like that of a detective who resists drawing conclusions that might narrow a search and instead focuses on gathering evidence from which conclusions might emerge.

The McLuhan habit of taking a neutral stance in evaluating technologies is sometimes seen by critics as suggesting that technologies are neutral (the opposite is true) or that the McLuhans don’t have an opinion. Marshall McLuhan insisted on diagnosis before prescription and his experience taught him that a point of view was a distinct liability in trying to get at the nature of something operating on a dynamic, environmental level. And so, he said, “I don’t explain, I explore.” (6) The efficacy of any prescription is dependent on the quality of the diagnosis, in turn dependent on the accumulation and discernment of all available data.

Finally, Lopez writes “In practical terms, this means designing lessons that explicitly connect media analysis to environmental action, showing students that understanding how media systems work is itself part of responding to ecological crisis.” In this, he is in keeping with the McLuhan tradition.

Often labeled a media theorist, Marshall McLuhan is better understood as a media activist. “The present book, in seeking to understand many media, the conflicts from which they spring, and the even greater conflicts to which they give rise, holds out the promise of reducing these conflicts by an increase of human autonomy.” (7) Eric McLuhan put it a little more strongly when he said in his last speech “media ecology is not a spectator sport.” (8) If McLuhan work is to be seen as a kind of environmentalism, it should also be seen as a kind of environmental activism which recognizes technology and culture as inextricably linked and urges conservation and, where desirable, remediation.

    Chair and Associate Professor of Communications and Media Studies John Cabot University in Rome, Italy

    Antonio Lopez, Ph.D., is an expert curriculum designer, educator, trainer, and theorist with a research focus on bridging ecojustice and media literacy. He is a founding theorist and architect of ecomedia literacy and creator of the ecomedialiteracy.org website, which curates teaching resources. He has written numerous academic articles, essays, and four books: Ecomedia Literacy: Integrating Ecology into Media Education; Greening Media Education: Bridging Media Literacy with Green Cultural Citizenship; The Media Ecosystem: What Ecology Can Teach Us About Responsible Media Practice; and Mediacology: A Multicultural Approach to Media Literacy in the 21st Century. He is lead editor of the forthcoming Routledge Handbook of Ecomedia Studies. Currently he is Professor of Communications and Media Studies at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy.     Director The McLuhan Institute

    Andrew McLuhan is Director of The McLuhan Institute, which he began in 2017. His first major research project was in the cataloging and evaluation of Marshall McLuhan’s working library, now named to UNESCO’s Memory of the World register, and he has presented widely on the subject. A frequent speaker on university campuses, Andrew has addressed audiences at the Münster School of Design, Carleton University, most recently at the University of Toronto and La Universidad de la Sabana in Bogotá.
